15. Eucott Bay to Ocean Falls

Up anchor at 6:50am to make the short run to Ocean Falls and have lots of time to explore it. No iPad position or WX on radio again. No matter as into the arm we only had 9 knots wind. A quick trip and we were into the docks at 10:45. We elected to stay at the dock as there are no great anchorages around but happy we did so. With water restrictions due to the dry summer in many locations, Ocean Falls had LOTS of water and no issues in topping up the tanks. There was satellite internet and two PCs available in the dock hut (very slow, but could get weather updates) - and the moorage was 1/3 of the cost of the resorts. Space is a bit tight and late comers rafted up.

True to the reputation of Ocean Falls a light rain started. Exploring the town was very interesting and a very different experience from the remoteness of prior days.  Walking through deserted homes, the school and hotel was a bit eerie. Buying the book (*) on the local history is recommended to understand just how vibrant a community it was back in the day.

(*) Rain People: The Story of Ocean Falls, British Columbia - $20 there, a captive audience :)

Ah, the irony

One of many character homes slowly deteriorating

The dam that dominates town is still being maintained as it now provides power to Bella Bella

Enterprising locals have created a 'museum' of things from around town - some a bit close to the junk category, but some interesting gems in there. We had fun reading the Hotel night log from 50 years ago, complete with who had partaken too much and who was fighting with whom.

A different era
The rain turned from light to heavy during the night. The Ocean Falls reputation stands (no wonder they have no water restrictions).
