The plan for the day was to head to Kwatsi Bay as we missed it in prior years and have heard such great things about it. We awoke to rain and cold, so the sensible thing was to put both heaters on and head back to bed and sleep in a bit.
Narrow Old Passage |
We ran through the middle of the Burdwood group and past the very nice looking anchorage in the middle. There was a trawler and a number of Kayaks already there. It would have been a bit tight to get another big boat in there.
We passed Lacy Falls but given the extremely dry summer there was not even a trickle coming down the rocks. The plans for the standard boat-photo-in-front-of-the-falls will have to wait for another year.
A totally dry Lacy Falls |
We checked out Watson Cove as a contingency anchorage. It looked 'ok' but deep at 70'+. Not one we want a primary spot though I expect you might have it to yourself. Bill Proctor describes some nice walks there that are 'really worth the time'.
We moved on and anchored NE side of Kwatsi with a stern tie. There were another 1/2 dozen boats but lots of room. Everyone on the N side used stern ties, with those in the E end swinging.
And Kawtsi certainly matched its reputation. Majestic black granite walls around with almost countless waterfalls and beautiful clear blue/green water. We dinghied around to the small docks at the Marina. There is not a lot of dock space and it is pretty rustic but they were very friendly and I expect a nice place to stop for a day or two. We hiked the very short (5 min) trail in the NW corner to a waterfall - trail access marked with a fishing float in a tree. Nice to get on land for a bit.
