10. Pruth Bay. Hakai fishing and Calvert Island Lookout

A day to hang at Calvert Island. We head out in the dinghy at 6:30 for some fishing in Hakai Passage with an afternoon walk to the beach and Calvert Island lookout.

Our dinghy is a 13' Rendova with a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha. It is heavy, and the engine seems a bit anemic for a 50hp, but she is a great ship - comfortable and with the fibreglass running up the side and to the top of the tubes, she is stable and has good mounts for downriggers etc.

Back from fishing

We head out to Odlam Point but the seas are large enough to spook us. After 1/2 hour we elect to shoot for Barney Point and more sheltered conditions. It is much better. We get 2 Chinook and 3 rock fish, including one of the nicest Red Snappers we have ever caught.

After lunch we head out again to West Beach, and this time take the trail from the south end up to the lookout. It is perhaps 1/2 hour and well worth it.

Beautiful clear water - south end near trail head

Must be pretty windy a lot of the time
Nearing the top - well built stairs and boardwalk

A panorama from the top - doesn't do it justice though
Cruising the Secret Coast by Hamilton references the hike to the microwave tower near Keith Anchorage. After doing the lookout from South Beach we didn't think there was a need to do the microwave tower as well - it was that enjoyable. The two lookouts are only about 2 miles (as the crow flies) from each other.
